How Your Subconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior

By Kenneth Sanders

The tricky thing about the subconscious or unconscious mind is that it controls actions from the shadows even if one is not aware of it. However knowing how your subconscious mind rules your behavior is one way to learn how to reprogram the unconscious mind to work differently. Here are a few things that one might want to know about how this part of the mind works.

One of the most important things to take note of would be how this part of the brain functions. Now, one may try to think of the brain as like a big computer that has certain program files in the database needed to run certain applications. In a way, the unconscious brain is the big database that contains all the root files for programs and the behaviors are the applications. So in order to change the behavioral patterns of a person, one has to trace these actions all the way to the unconscious brain first.

It would be best to explain how this works through an example. For instance, if a young teenage girl suffered from bullying back when she was much younger, it is no surprise that she may portray some insecurities or lack of self confidence due to the traumatic incident. One can say that the traumatic memory may actually be the cause of the certain behaviors that she is exhibiting.

Looking further, these experiences can cause him to have beliefs. Now, take note that it is not the experience per se that would create the negative behavior but rather the reaction to the experience. The reaction would turn into beliefs and the beliefs would be the ones to turn into actions.

Going back to the example of the person with self confidence, a traumatic experience could possibly be bullying. Due to his experience with bullying, he then created a belief in his mind that people hate him and are out to get him. With that kind of embedded belief, certain traits such as fear and anxiety would come out.

That said, a common question asked by most people would be whether it is possible to embed more positive beliefs in the database. The answer is yes because the brain has a type of focus program wherein what one constantly feeds into it will be the one that gets embedded. That said, it is possible to kick out negative beliefs by reinforcing good ones instead.

In order to do this, one has to first change his memories by making new and good ones. By making new and good memories, one will be able to translate them into new beliefs and new perceptions. In a way, it would be like replacing the old bad ones with some new good ones.

Always remember though, that the unconscious brain has this rule that it stores in beliefs that are constantly being reinforced. So if one drums positive beliefs into his or her head everyday, the unconscious brain will see it as a habit and thus embed it inside the database. It will then translate into habit forming behaviors.
