Dogs For Protection

By Nui Kahuna

Last night I was cleaning up my office which has been in a horrible state of disarray since the end of July or so. I kept putting off cleaning it up, but it finally got to me. I started in about four in the afternoon, and was still working at midnight, and I suppose I am about half way through the process. Around twelve thirty I opened a box to see what was in it, and I came upon some photos that were taken about twenty years ago.

I found a photo of me and Hudson, my pet dog, who was a good friend to me. Hudson was a half German Shepherd and half St. Bernard, pretty big dog and was about 145 pounds. Hudson was a well trained protection dog and that was his job.

I never put him on a leash in all the years I had him. He walked right beside me, and never strayed. I rarely had to tell him to stay. In fact I rarely had to tell him to do anything, because he just sensed what to do.

He loved to play, and would fetch a ball 300 times. He loved playing with other dogs, and never once got in a fight. He really liked kids, and if around really small kids he would lay down and let them come to him.

As I can remember, Hudson was never mean even when we got in some tight scrapes. He never bit anyone. I never saw him bare his teeth, if he felt there was a threat, he'd just stand with his paw on them and gaze as a challenge to junkies, and they always ran.

During a deer hunting trip a stray bullet hit Hudson, and he died of it. I have never discovered who did it, they must have vacated the area so quickly. I buried Hudson high on a mountain so he could see the valley. He had a good life, he served more than his purpose. He had protected me from many dangers, and he was as good friend as you could ask for.

It's been quite a while since Hudson has been gone. Yes, no more Hudson to protect me. But I have acquired this virtual alarm system called Secure Dog. It uses a radar thing like wave that can see through cement, brick, wood or glass.

The virtual alarm system can feel a presence of someone within 22 feet, then starts barking like crazy. You are then alarmed that there's a mook outside your house. Now, I feel like I have my Hudson back.

Mooks hate noise, and most of them are scared to death of dogs, especially big dogs. With Secure Dog, you get that Big Dog sound, but not the Big Dog bill for chow. Or the vet.
