Home Safety: Outdoor Lighting

By Pierre Levingston

Outdoor lighting can be an easy step you can take to deter burglars from prowling around your home. It's important to keep your home looking well protected. Outdoor lighting can be a great asset in guarding your home against break-ins.

Burglars usually go for homes that have poor lighting. They use the cover of darkness to find the best entrance to the home. The reason is because if they stay in the dark they have little worry of being spotted by neighbors or people on the street.

If a burglar does choose to break in to your home, they will have a much harder chance of actually gaining entry if you have outdoor security lighting. They have a much shorter amount of time to get inside your home with out being spotted. Outdoor security lights are great because burglars don't have the option of hiding in the dark and taking their time.

There are a variety of outdoor lights you can choose from. You can use motion lights that go off when something moves in front of it. You can also have ones that are on all the time, or ones that are on a timer.

Motion sensors tend to be the most effective. They turn on when something moves by them. While having outdoor lighting turned on from dusk until dawn will keep your outside yard well lit, it can soon add up on your electricity bill.

Motion lights are activated when someone steps with in a certain radius. They can be adjusted so that only larger things set them off. This can be very helpful if your property has smaller animals.

They also serve to alert you if someone is prowling around your home. Motion sensors are good for security. The lights can detect a potential intruder by turning on when they get close to the sensors.

Outdoor lighting has many perks. They can help keep burglars away and keep your home safer. They are also beneficial when unexpected family or friends stop by and need to find their way to your porch in the dark.
