Will Attending Cosmetology School Really Lead To My Dream Job?

By Erich Ezekial

Going to beauty school is an increasingly common decision for those individuals who are keen to make a career from something they love: namely cosmetology. Esthetics and cosmetology courses expose students to a wide range of hair and beauty techniques as well as instructing them on the practical aspects of working in the business. Nevertheless with the economy being slow, prospective students are often worried that there won't be a job at the end of their studies. Luckily, the cosmetics and beauty industry is going strong.

If beauty school is something you want to look into, be sure to know yourself first. You should be ready to take a wide range of responsibility and be able to work, for the most part, independently. After this self reflection, begin to consider what, specifically, you would like to do with your degree? Would you like to work strictly in a salon? Or perhaps, you would like to go back and teach the classes you excelled in during your time at Beauty School. Keeping your goals in mind will make it easier to begin to make connections with people and form relationships with prospective employers.

Getting into a beauty school is, of course, just the first step. You will be expected to learn fast and be able to work on clients without making mistakes. This, of course, requires a great deal of application.

When you have completed beauty school, you will face the problem of finding that first, elusive job. Perhaps unsurprisingly, salons want to hire people with previous, professional experience. This makes it frustrating for first time job seeker who doesn't have that experience. It's something of a Catch-22. Nevertheless, once you've found your first job, then it becomes very much easier to move on.

Better still, the beauty schools themselves work very closely with students in order to improve their chances of landing that first job. This is definitely one of the aspects you really need to look into when choosing which beauty school to apply for. If the school has a consistently high placement rate, then it is certainly worth considering.

Make sure that, once you are attending beauty school, you do take time to speak with a placement advisor before you graduate. This will give you the best chance to secure a job as soon as you have graduated. Placement advisors will help you search for the type of place you would like to work and will advise on how to market yourself to them.

After graduating, if you wish to look to work in a salon, it is typically best to look to those that are in the same community your beauty school is in. These places are usually familiar with each other and are more likely to know the qualifications a student graduating possesses. If possible, try to work with the salon while you are still in school. You will gain valuable experience and build a relationship with the owner, which will prove valuable once you place yourself on the job market.

The key to achieving success after graduating cosmetology school is to be proactive in terms of network with potential employers while still in school. If you keep in mind the type of job you ultimately want, then you can search out ways that will help your resume when you need to start looking for a job. A positive attitude will give you an advantage over all the other applicants. Good luck with your future career!
