Personal Success With Self Help

By Olga Wright

The term "self-help" is arguably an ironic misnomer, for if one conducts a cursory investigation into the concept itself, we will find that it frequently entails no more than a visit to our local bookstore, where amidst a multitude of books in the selfsame category, we set out to find and purchase the one that most appeals to us. Once done, we will discover that our selection invariably features a self-styled (and often obscure) expert, eager to subject us to his own personal discourse on how we can achieve that which inspired our trip to the bookstore in the first place.

One of the vehicles we are using toward this is self help. There has been reports of an increase in self help books and other materials that flood book stores and websites. There seems to be no end to the modern person's need toward self actualization. Though self actualization is often a process and not necessarily a destination, self efficiency would certainly be one of the modern person's most prized life skills. Self help can range from medication to service options. Self help has become the culture of our time.

No doctor or scientist can fully dig deep into the mind of one who struggles on a continuous basis without trying to prescribe the latest and greatest medication. This is where the human spirit takes control, and without a doubt can prescribe a relief that no medication ever will.

The fact of the matter is, unless your life happens to be in a seemingly irreparable shambles, the aid of such "gurus" is redundant and an unfortunate misappropriation of your money.

Throughout the self help programme, the professional mental health expert could also play an important role in monitoring progress or the further development of the participant. In my opinion, self help is a great option, and this option is coupled with the facilitative role of an expert, the benefits can be rewarding to the individual. Without this kind of facilitation, the possibility or risk of the individual derailing from very useful guidelines is present. Facilitation of expertise help can assist the participant in further development as well as raise their self empowerment. A self empowered individual may in turn possess the self confidence needed to fully utilize or even create opportunities. However, the need for self empowerment, can vary from one person to the next.

But perhaps it needs to be acknowledged that there are times when our request for help may, in fact, be premature, in that we have neglected to apply a crucial step, namely, turning to and unlocking the door to our own inner resources; those which we have unknowingly cultivated over the years by virtue of our own personal experiences. Human potential is, after all, a dormant phenomenon, roused only by the exigencies of a crisis or dilemma.

The path to self improvement ultimately lies within. No doctor can prescribe the cure-all for all that ails. People who are continuously struggling with who they are and what they are about must reach deep inside and find places nobody else can touch. This place that nobody can touch is called one thing: hope. It is hope for yourself and hope for those you love.
