Security Home Improvements for the Old

By Martin White

The older generation could be seen by some burglars as an easy target. It is very important that the homes of the elderly are safe and secure, fitted will good quality locks and latches that are easy to use and look after. It is important to feel safe when at home in the day or sleeping at night and taking extra measures will do this reducing the threat considerably of an attack considerably.

Having this extra protection installed the thief?s work becomes harder and they may not try to break in at all. There is such a wide choice of equipment on offer and it may be confusing what to pick but one of the best investments that you could make is an alarm. These are fantastic and will protect almost any building or home. One thing to be aware of though is that they can be slightly complicated to set and work and are not suitable for everyone.

If you think that a burglar alarm is what your home needs then pick a good reputable alarm company and ensure a guarantee is provided. This will make sure that you are covered should the unfortunate event of a fault with the product happen. When choosing the alarm pick one that is easy to work and also make sure that the fitter provides you with full instructions and a demonstration to how everything works so you are comfortable with your new device.

There may be weak points around the home whether internal or external that needs to be identified and corrected. Security cameras that can be seen by anyone that comes onto the property can be a good deterrent as being filmed in the wrong will not help in court. Having a light that is sensitive to objects entering your private property, shining brightly when the do so is a great put off also to a potential threat.

When considering your options you will need to take into account your budget and how much that you can afford to spend. You may not have access to a large amount of money but whatever the budget something can be done to improve security if only just a little. However if you have spare funds and want to use them then you could fit an alarm that notifies someone if you fall or injure yourself.

Alarms like this keep elderly people more independent as they are light and hand held. Normal day to day living can go on but if you are unfortunate enough to have to use it then you will have the person of your choice contacted immediately. Loved ones can also rest knowing that if an emergency arose you will be able to get help fast.

Dogs are a great way to frighten off any potential intruder and also be a great friend. Spy holes, door chains and window locks are less inexpensive ways of securing things and keeping thieves at bay. If you also maintain or have someone maintain shrubs and bushes outside it will give less cover for someone who is maybe trying to hide and remain unnoticed.

Make sure that whatever you decide to do make it visible. By this we mean put signs up telling everyone that the property is alarmed and have beware of the dog stickers on you front door. Video cameras should be seen and this could stop someone from even thinking about breaking in.
