Dealing With Difficult Employees

By Brad Wilson

When you pass difficult individuals on the street, run into them at the store, or see them at the movie theatre, they don't present much of a problem. You can simply ignore their antics and move on with your life. When you work with difficult employees every day, however, life can become an irritating and frustrating mess.

Some individuals seem to be born with a gene that makes them more difficult to work with than others. These people come to work late, they leave before time and dress sloppily. They may ask too many questions, be distracting, challenge your authority, and neglect those small details that pull projects together. The communication they keep with co-workers is also irritating. They are often impolite, uniformed, condescending, misleading, or simply grouchy.

Do you work with anyone who fits this description? While you may never want to work with difficult people, it is likely that you have one problematic employee who causes low morale, and upsets clients in your office. There are ways to deal with these individuals, however, and we have listed some of the best below.

Dealing With Difficult Employees

Don't Overlook Them- Ignoring these type of people and their behaviours means you don't want your company to succeed. Ignoring the problem is never a solution to it despite what you may think. Face these employees head on and confront the problem so you can find a solution.

Don't Be Silent- Some employees might be difficult without knowing it. It is your job to make sure they do, so intervening in a potentially problematic situation as quickly as possible is important. Give your employees feedback on their productivity and behaviours and help them find solutions to their problems.

Get Corporate Clothing- Apparel uniforms will ensure that you don't have to correct people wearing sloppily attire while helping your employees to act and look professional. When office wear is worn by your employee, he will feel as if he is a part of the business, and he will be less likely to be grouchy or impolite to clients.

Nudge Them Back On Track- It may sometimes be necessary to actually coach these difficult individuals on the right and wrong things to do in the office. You can do this through the human resource department. The person will need time to practise this new behaviour so you have to be easy with him. However, do provide feedback on their successes and failures.

Terminating- If an employee continues to disturb you and your company despite putting all these efforts towards straightening him, you may have to terminate his employment. Make sure you comply with your company's protocol, however, and give your employee plenty of time to address his behaviour. In some working environments, it may be necessary to give the employee both written and verbal warning before termination.

As an employer, you are going to work with many difficult individuals throughout the years. You can always use feedback and coaching to help this set of people in being the best they can be. And, if they are constantly late or don't have the right attitude, find uniform suppliers and provide them with corporate clothing for a more professional look and attitude.
