How Hard Is It To Get Into Stanford

As a student - or parent - You may well be mulling over your next step in further education. I'm sure that you're aware the US, particularly the Ivy League, is home to some of the best universities on Earth, not least Harvard and Yale. To the west however, Stanford is close to the heart of many would be graduates. So, the outcome of this write-up is to give you, the reader, key insights on Stanford University.

Stanford University is based in Palo Alto, California. Here nestled a short distance hither San Francisco Bay, the Pacific Ocean and Silicon Valley, students are drawn by the stunning environmental surroundings. Silicon Valley of course, hosts some of the worlds leading technology companies including Google, Facebook, Hewlett Packard and Cisco Systems.

Stanford University was born out of tragedy. In the loss of his son, Leland Stanford Jr., Stanford Sr chose to build Stanford to immortalize his sons memory. Today it's known by students as 'The Farm' and sits in 8,000 acres of land. Perhaps you've seen the Stanford seal? The schools primary color is cardinal and the seal features a tall Redwood Tree and a motto, translated from German reading 'The Wind of Freedom Blows'.

It may (or may not) surprise you to learn that Stanford admissions officers receive over 32,000 applicants per year. Although, sadly, just 7% of applicants earn entry. Stanford students come from diverse backgrounds and have given birth to a celebrated rap sheet of alumni. These celebrated graduates include the founders of Hewlett Packard - William and David - as well Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners and leading figures in the world of US and international politics.

Stanford students benefit from some of the most generous financial aid provisions in the States. Over 80% of students received an average of $40,593 in 2010, a total figure of $117 million.

The Times 2011-12 'World University Rankings' placed Stanford joint second with Harvard. Stanford's position best other notable universities including Yale, Oxford and Cambridge.
