Doomsday Preppers: The Strategy of Preston White

By Terrance Franklin

1. Fukushima nuclear meltdown

Preston is worried about the effects of radiation from the Fukushima reactor meltdown getting to the west region of the US, where he resides. There has been substantial modeling done on the currents within the sea as well as radiation hitting the western coast is simply a question of time. Unfamiliar debris, such as a concrete dock which washed on the Oregon coastline recently is only the most noticeable part of this. In water there are countless radioactive molecules, with a lot more flowing into the ocean from rivers close to Fukushima.

The consequences of radiation are known to anyone who is ready for a nuclear devastation. Fallout in its most extreme form can cause loss of life within just a few days, however over time there are a different set of risks. While acute radiation could cause fever, nausea and also death, minimal dosages of radioactivity can result in birth defects and cancer (generally thyroid) with time.

2. Maintaining seeds

Preston's survival strategy centers on becoming self-sufficient with his food production. With radioactive isotopes including cesium as well as plutonium floating around in the pacific ocean from runoff in Japan, he fears that there's a tide of nuclear rain headed towards the west sea-coast. Certainly, it is an exact forecast as radioactive rainfall is found in Los Angeles at levels as much as 5 times of what is standard. With radioactive rain particles seeping to the groundwater, they could be ultimately picked up by usual crops and accumulated in the body.

3. A greenhouse made of tents

Preston's program doesn't seem to be one of surviving a societal collapse, it is focused instead on merely guarding himself and his city from the effects of irradiated foods. His concept of amassing varieties of seeds comes off as a little stamp-collector-like to me. However, if it is giving him what he wants to stay alive, more power to him. So as to defend his crops from soaking up radioactive rain he is setting up a couple of tent greenhouses. These have got an edge over standard greenhouses in the sense they can be transferred quickly if the demand develops.

But, if moving is on Preston's mind it might only be better to transfer across the country. While discussing strategies to shift into a mobile house to more easily be able to bug out might be good for the show, Preston might be better suited in relocating to an area with fertile land that isn't situated beside an ocean filled with radioactive isotopes. Only a thought.

4. Security

Viewing Preston's focus on a small amount of guns is a welcome contrast to the doomsday preppers that have displayed stockpiles of hundreds of firearms for one individual. By focusing on 3 or 4 firearms, Preston can settle his ammunition outlets, practice more with each and every gun and know the internal operation of how to clean and mend his weapons far better than if he had a crazy armory.
