The Disadvantages Of A Poor Self Concept

By Jamie Derivieres

Self concept refers to how individuals assess themselves in the context of circumstances. For instance, someone may regard themselves highly when it comes to soccer, but have a low opinion of ability to compete academically. This means that one's perception of their value and abilities will vary over time.

The right opinion of one's value and abilities is extremely important. As the Good Book puts it, people should learn to judge themselves and others aright. That has very many benefits. For instance, one is able to accept correction without perceiving it as personal attack.

A faint heart never worn a fair lady, so an old adage goes. A positive opinion of character enables individual to take risks they would not have been able to otherwise. Such an individual is more likely to be successful in life.

They then seek to solve that problem by pulling others down to their level. Such individuals will have a great deal of difficulty relating with others, particularly if they are more successful. Since the ability to get along with others is critical to success, such people will not get ahead. Unfortunately, they will see others as the problem.

The person with high character esteem is confident of their ability to succeed now and in the future. They have a positive expectation of the days to come. On the contrary, a person who has a poor opinion of value will fear posterity, and constantly struggle with depression.

Birds of a feather, they say, gather together. When a person is confident, they attract others who share the same characteristics. They will in turn build and motivate each other to accomplish many things. One reason for this is because they do not view others as threats. Such are the benefits of positive self concept.
