What You Need To Know About Physician Coaching

By Kerry Ross

Doctors are probably the most looked up to individuals in the society to today. They are smart, successful, a problem solver rather than a help seeker. They are a bunch of well trained individuals that perhaps belong to the upper class of the society. To most people they can do no wrong. Most of that maybe true, however just like anyone else doctors have their own problems, fears, insecurities and sometimes their success goes too much in their head that personal relationship and patient relationships can be strained. Should you have similar problems, then physician coaching might be of great help.

Numerous medical studies have taken a closer look towards such practice, and results have been surprisingly positive. Although not all doctors are actually in favor of such practice, those that have tried have expressed their agreement to it. Most doctors did not receive proper training about organizational structures and leadership.

Ironically though, doctors were believed to be in the leadership roles. These skills needed to be taught, learned and practiced. The lack of knowledge and skills on such area may result to more conflict and less efficient work and personal relationship. Coaching is about guiding or assisting a doctor to see the issues and things in front of them which they were not aware before.

Projecting fears, worries and helplessness at all times can result to an unhealthy relationships to oneself, other people and with work. For such instances as well, a doctor may start to be unsatisfied with his work and life in general, and that makes a great impact towards one's performance at work and his personal relationships too.

Although medical doctors are successful with their careers, most often than not, their personal life and relationships could be in strain. For example, if one is doctor that seems to take good care of his or her patients but not to himself, or if you realized there's not enough time to do things that really matters to you, then such practice could be very helpful.

Keep in mind that such activity is far from psychotherapy. Psychotherapy focuses on psychopathology, its signs and symptoms, making diagnoses and implementing therapy. On the other hand, this activity focuses on exploring unfulfilled dreams, challenges that a client is having and life balance in general.

The ultimate goal of such activity is to help the doctors who have lost the joy an passion for their work, that is affecting both their professional performance and personal lives. The activity strives to renew the passion that the doctor once had for his profession or better yet rekindle the joy they had once, for their work.

It does not avoid feelings but rather explores as a technique to address procrastination, ambivalence, hesitation and reach for the goals rather than fix whatever was once broken. To have a more efficient activity, find yourself a reliable coach, partner, friend and confidant. Do not hesitate to ask referrals from you fellow doctors that are into such activity as well.

Physician coaching is a relationship built on openness, trust, willingness to face challenges. Common results of such activity is improved working relationships with clients and peers, increased teamwork, increased productivity and remarkable return of investments. Sometimes an organization or institution can launch this program and perhaps increase patient satisfaction on your facility.
