One means of identifying the various residential areas is by their position with respect to the Colorado River, which runs through the heart of town.

If you were to draw a line from where the river intersects with Highway 1, it would reach Zilker Metropolitan Park, a public recreational area encompassing 350 acres. The park is named after the individual who donated the land in 1917, Andrew Jackson Zilker. The park itself is packed with attractions, including Barton Springs pool, Umlauf Sculpture Garden, Zilker Botanical Garden and the Zilker Zephyr miniature train. Lady Bird Lake lies next to the park. Apartments near Zilker Park are handy for both the river and the highway.

Auditorium Shores is a public park located right on the river near Lady Bird Lake at South First Street. It is a pleasant and popular neighborhood and forms the site of the yearly South by Southwest festival (SXSW). This annual event, which has been going on since 1987, can go on for as long as ten days and consists of films, music and other entertainment. Another welcome amenity in Auditorium Shores is a leash-free dog park, where dogs can frolic with other dogs and humans can mingle with other humans.

Barton Springs Road provides residents of the Auditorium Shores area with convenient access to Highway 1. Three bridges carry traffic across the river to Northwest Austin via Congress Avenue, First Street and Lamar Boulevard. A footbridge section of the Lady Bird Lake Trail caters for pedestrian traffic.

Homes are nice in the northwest quadrant formed by the intersection of Interregional Highway 290 (I-35) and the Colorado River. The neighborhood is home to a middle school and the Capitol Building of the State of Texas. MoPac Expressway, also referred to as Loop 1, is a freeway named after the Missouri Pacific Railroad.

If you can tolerate a 30-mile drive to and from work, you might find the lower population density of Georgetown more to you liking.
