Which Pre-Employment Testing Methods Will You Have To Go Through

By Cathy Mercer

A lot of employers use pre-employment testing nowadays to weed out job applicants that aren't suitable for their companies to begin with. In fact, there are a lot of different tests that they can ask applicants to go through in order to find the best candidates overall. The most common ones, though, would be the skills, aptitude and general drug tests.

The skill testing method is very common and is used to check whether applicant actually have the skills that are needed for the job at hand. In some cases, it is also used to check whether the applicant was lying in their resume or not just to get the job. These skills may include typing, writing or designing mock products for the company.

The good news is that this type of test is easy to prepare for. You just need to find out what your potential employer is looking for in an employee beforehand. After that, you can then take mock tests online or practice your hand at drawing or designing as needed.

On the flip side, there is the aptitude testing method, which basically exists to find out how capable applicants can be. Here, they might test out the applicant's skills in reasons, writing, counting or speaking. Without a doubt, this is very different compared to former method because it also checks whether applicants can still learn more as time goes by.

Some employers would prefer to train people as they are hired. This is where aptitude tests would come in the most handy. Some general tests in this department would include IQ, intelligence and specialized aptitude tests.

Drug tests are usually part of an employer's testing process, as well. To conduct these tests, employers have certain programs in place that test applicants for drug use. These tests are always administered fairly and may be done consistently, depending on the employers' requests. Naturally, they follow state and federal laws, too.

The rules in terms of this will depend on the state. In some cases, applicants might have to get a job offer before they can be made to take a drug test. In other cases, it merely depends on the actual employers.

A lot of the time, applicants will be asked to pee into a cup, so that a laboratory can analyze the urine. This particular method can look for different types of drugs, including marijuana, morphine, heroin, cocaine, PCP and amphetamines. The best part is that it is actually a reliable way to find out if someone is on drugs. It is cheap to administer, too.

Of course, there are many other types of pre-employment testing out there. You can be tested through your breath, your hair, your saliva or your blood, for instance. Either way, though, you should know that you will be screened before you get hired for a job, so make sure you prepare yourself for anything before applying for one to begin with.
