MMA Twitters You Need To Follow

By Rod Bourgoine

Twitter is fast becoming a top source of news on the planet, and if you are one of the millions of people who are both an MMA fan and have a twitter account, you probably follow at least one or two fighters. While you probably can't and shouldn't follow everyone, here are a few people that are absolutely worthy of following.

Love him or hate him, Dana White is definitely someone you should follow. After all, he is the head of UFC and not only does he often offer up breaking news about UFC, he's entertaining. He's been part of several notorious twitter feuds, including a recent profanity-laced exchange between himself and Ken Shamrock. At any rate, he's never afraid to say what he thinks.

We all know Joe Rogan from his color commentary at MMA fights, and his vast knowledge about the sport makes him worth following. He also is a great stand-up comedian so his posts are often funny. He also likes to tweet about how much he loves marijuana and other enthogenic drugs, and he is a strong supporter of legalizing cannabis. He also has said that he is suspicious about the authenticity of the moon landings and believes in a few interesting conspiracy theories.

While Dana White and Joe Rogan might have their quirks, they provide plenty of substantial information about mixed martial arts. Chael Sonnen, on the other hand, while he is certainly a seasoned veteran of the sport, tends to tweet about MMA in a less informative manner. Generally, he tweets about why he dislikes Wanderlei Silva, lately in the form of poetry. Actually, he has no problem insulting anyone in the world of MMA or anyone who lives in Brazil. This is why following him is entertaining and why Dana White picked him and Wanderlei Silva to coach the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.

In addition, most fighters have their own twitter account and you should follow your favorite. BJ Penn is a social media expert, and following his tweets is like following an MMA magazine or a reporter. Tito Ortiz is an interesting and sometimes even inspirational guy to follow. He obviously posts about MMA but also about his life outside the cage.

Virtually every MMA organization has a Twitter feed, and there are some excellent sports journalists with Twitter accounts that you might be interesting in viewing. Ariel Helwani is one great example, and he links to his interviews with fighters, as well as breaking news and other helpful MMA tidbits. Loretta Hunt is another great reporter that you should follow. She has been working in MMA since 2001 and there are few people more well-informed about mixed martial arts.
