Some Reasons To Join The Military

By Marissa Velazquez

Military refers to an organization with the responsibility to defend a country, as well as its citizens. Multiple branches exist within the organization, each of these has its own specific duties and purpose. Generally, people who have or do serve are considered commendable for their time and sacrifice. As with anything, there are pros and cons to enlisting. There are also different reasons to join the military that are expected to vary by individual.

A reason that many people join is for education. Many dream of going to college without taking out loans or other aid. In the United States, the military has numerous educational programs available that pay for a portion or all of the costs.

Money is one other reason a person may choose to sign up. Many positions are available and even entry-level spots offer decent pay. Sometimes the military will also cover room and board for service members. As a person gains more experience, he or she can move up in the ranks and earn a higher salary and more benefits.

The work that is done when enlisted will vary and depend on many factors. However, it is expected that strenuous duties may be involved and going to combat is a possibility. Luckily, the organization offers decent medical coverage. In the modern times, finding an affordable plan that offers adequate health care coverage for families or individuals may be hard to do. These benefits often come without deductibles, annual fees and co-pays.

In general, those who join do not consider their time in service to be there end all. It is just an opportunity for them to find steady, reliable work that is rewarding on many levels. It is also a chance for them to gain new experience, skills, discipline and direction that can benefit them in other aspects of their lives. Those who have served for a long time may choose to retire early on and collect benefits and pay.

Some individuals join just for an experience. Most service people get to travel and might even take up residence at a military station in another country. This allows for exposure to new things and cultures. The work done while enlisted may be applied in other jobs as well.

These are not the only reasons for enlisting. Some do this to keep with family tradition. Others are interested in just giving back. Camaraderie may be a reason for certain individuals. In fact, there are a lot of people who end up finding close friends and spouses while they are enlisted. Not everyone needs a substantial reason to join and there are people who do so just to learn who they are and attempt something different and new.

There might be many different reasons to join the military. Every person signs up for his or her own purpose. Sometimes this is a career move or to get a better education. Other times it is about the stable benefits and money that come with military involvement. There are even persons who do it just to meet new people, collect memories, take on new skills and gain valuable experience. Whatever the reasoning, the decision should ultimately be made by the individual who would be signing up.
