There are various kinds of sports related to this. They have different terms in different countries. With that, they also vary in the moves, discipline, and style.

The most popular kind you will hear is the kung fu of China, the karate of Japan, and many others. With the uniform, you are taking into account the particular kind you are engaging with since it marks your membership. But more than that, it speaks for your convenience. It would be hard perform wearing tight pants and a heavy jacket.

The belt has a significant value in martial arts since the honor lies in it. It is taught that all the knowledge you learn in this endeavor is stored in the belt so you should not wash it or your learning will go along with it.

That actually came from the Japanese belief since jiu jitsu is adapted from the Japanese. It was originally taught by Mitsuyo Maeda to two Brazilian boys and later passed it on to their families, then to their friends, until it spread to the community. With this, It is already widespread and has even developed its own style.
