Racism In Sports Media And How It Is Perceived

By Mattie MacDonald

By definition, racism is the hate of one person by another on the base of either the language they speak or the tone of their skin. The one that usually expresses this type of negative feeling usually presumes that because they are of a certain ethnical origin, they are superior compared to others. It has roots dug deep all through history. For that, racism in sports media is still a very big problem.

There are certain aspects in the society that are held responsible for bringing the aspect of unity among people. Media is such a device where people can communicate and share information from whatever part in the world that they may be situated at. One of the major issues of discussion is sports. Here, due to certain ignorant people, hate is preached in these games via the same instrument that was supposed to bring oneness.

One cannot keep up with the changing technology. Through the internet, people from all over the world can be connected just as a small village. Here, among other things, sport is usually a big topic that almost everyone participates in. Discrimination due to race is on the high as certain players, because they belong to a different race, are scorned and insulted. This may ruin someone emotionally and the very weak may end up quitting the game permanently.

There comes a time when very great tournaments rare organized. The composition of these sports is quite different as in participation is people from different countries that speak a foreign dialect. In other cases, the players are not given the privilege of having commentators who can translate for them the ongoing game. This becomes an issue due to the fact that only individuals from certain language are affected which brings about ill feeling and one feels like an outcast.

Sports coverage of the black players is another issue of concern. There is a very large population of white media that covers the major professional sports and also a high number of black players in these games. Report that usually comes out is that one that refers to these black players as natural athletes who do not have to work as hard as their other team mates in order to get results. This is just trash talk and it is not healthy for games.

On a more positive note, this issue in the sports sector is going on the low. Comparison cannot be made like in the early years where even people went as far as killing their team members due to hate. The media has made steps to come up with ways and means to see to it that the use of hateful language is kept on the low and peace in maintained.

It is said that broadcasting can build and destroy. There are certain athletes who are just a darling to the public eye and because they are of a certain ethnical background there are those that are not happy about that. They just and patiently wait for one to screw up in the slightest manner so that they can escalate the issue and drug their name all through the mud until they are no more.

The relationship between racial discrimination and sport media is tight. Research has shown that a contributing factor can be the fact that the various media avenues that cover sports are mainly composed of the white. To curb this predicament, an equal balance should be kept while hiring reporters to include all.
