By Xavier Devon

Garage door security may be the last thing we remember when we plan and construct our garage. Nonetheless, it remains one of the key points in our home that need security. Many times we overlook the garage door security when we construct our garages. Your garage is an entry to your home that if not secured can invite the wrong people to enter your home.

Even if you have a detached garage the garage still needs to be secure. You vehicle is one of your most valuable possessions and if not secured, can be driven away by a skilled car thief.

Some garage door openers have a locking device to automatically lock when the door closes after the vehicle goes in or out. Unfortunately these locking mechanisms are not as secure as they might seem. You also need to install a deadbolt lock and or a padlock to engage when you are gone for extended time.

Attached Garages are Especially Vulnerable

If your garage is attached to your house, you need to be especially conscience that if a burglar can enter into the garage, he can be concealed from sight in the garage. This will enable him to enter your home without being seen from anyone outside.

It does not matter how long you plan to be out of the house. Develop the habit of checking your garage door security once you plan to leave the house.

Some people find it inconvenient to step out of their vehicles just to close and lock their garage door, as well as open, it to get inside. Remember though that a few steps can mean security for your family and property.

Remote Controlled Garage Door Openers are Not Always the Answer

With the new addition of the electronic garage door openers, you may think that they will protect your belongings. It may slow down the burglar but in most cases that is all it will do. You need to especially be garage door security conscious when leaving for an extended period. Another thing to keep in mind, with the properly approved security system, your property insurance in some places will cover you in case of loss.

One way of ensuring security in your home and garage is to limit and control the access to your garage regardless of whether this is attached to your main house or not. This becomes easier with the right proper security equipment and with the proper garage door locks.
