What comes first, action or motivation?
This is an old debate. If you do a search on this topic, you will defintely find a ton of results.
This question is kind of like the proverbial "What came first, the chicken or the egg?" question. Of course, there are different schools of thought, but I am gonna have to say that action comes first.
One minute you weren't motivated and then something happened (which means that some action occurred) that caused you to feel motivated. If you just sat there waiting for motivation to magically appear you would still be sitting there.
The Principle of Vibration helps to bring some clarity to this: "Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates."
Action is a constant. Some type of action will always be in existence. I don't want to get too complicated so, for the sake of simplicity, let's focus on human productivity. Haven't you ever felt more motivated after you started on task, like cleaning the house, than you were before you started? That happens to everybody.
Just like it takes a spark to start a flame, it takes action to spark motivation. Just because it comes first, however, doesn't mean that action is more important than motivation because action won't last very long without motivation.
If you want to use the Law of Inertia (An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force) to your advantage you must take action.
When people come to me wondering what happened to their motivation, my advice is simple:
Do something. It doesn't matter what it is, as long as it's positive.
No motivation? Take action. No inspiration? Take action. Feeling depressed? Take action.
Take action and...git 'er done!
