The Aquarian Gospel was written by Levi H. Dowling, and published in 1908. He claimed to have gotten the revelations it contains from the Akashic Records. The Akashic Records have been written about in metaphysical texts, and are supposed to be the Book of Life. The theory is that a soul, before it is born, can read the pages of the life he is about to enter. This soul can choose, to some degree, the family and circumstances that will best serve his time on earth in that life.
After we are born, we lose our memories of the Book of Life, and our previous states. There are some people who are able to go back into their memories and access this information. This may be achieved through hypnosis. Some who are skilled clairvoyants have also claimed to have read these records. Dowling's book is his record of the knowledge he gained while learning about Jesus Christ, in the Book. Some scholars have disputed certain aspects of the text. One dispute arises over the time Jesus is supposed to have spent in India.
The name of the gospel was derived from Dowling's convictions about time. Time, he believed, was divided into ages, which each spanned 20,000 years. The coming age would be ruled by the astrological house of Aquarius.
His research instilled in him a belief that Jesus was a man who had allowed the Christ to enter him. By doing so, he could become a role model for the rest of humanity. This acceptance of Christ within him was a christening.
He also believed that the Records had answers to the questions many have had about reincarnation. He felt that this belief helps us to understand why many good people suffer misfortune. When the soul chooses its life's journey, it is allowed to make reparations for previous wrongs. In this way, the soul grows, eventually becomes whole, and is christened.
The records state that before we are born, we have knowledge of God, but forget him when we enter life. It claims, contrary to many fundamentalist teachings, that no one is ever given up by God. He will not abandon a single soul. All souls continue to grow, and evolve, until they are whole.
Interest in his work was revived in the 1960's. It led to the formation of the Christine Church, so named as its congregants believe that the church is the bride of Christ. Some believe that the Jesus Freak movement of that time was also inspired by Dowling's text.
It is an attractive theory. There continues to be interest in this book, and the belief system it inspired. There is much we do not understand about ourselves, and our role in this sphere. These writings attempt to provide some answers.
