It's no secret that starting an exercise program can be good for your physical and mental health. So many people live sedentary lives, sitting in front of their computers and their television screens, and they just forget how good it feels to move your muscles and get your heart pumping. When you exercise regularly, you lose weight and you just get stronger. This is something we should all be doing. I think, however, that martial arts have additional benefits that go beyond the purely physical.
Martial arts programs can teach you how to control your body. You learn to focus on how your body is moving. How you hold your hands and where you place your feet can have a big impact on what you're able to do. Strike a board with just the right focus, and it might break in half for you. Strike that same board in the wrong way or with an inattentive mind, and you may end up hurting yourself while the board stays in one piece. Martial arts programs teach you to focus your mind and think about your body in a whole new way.
The form of martial arts that I teach at the Jung SuWon Martial Art Academy can provide even more benefits for users. This form of martial arts teaches students about inner power and harmony. Students identify their hidden powers, and they learn to channel those powers to do important work and achieve their goals. The mind, the body and the spirit are unified in my exercises. My students achieve mental fitness as well as physical fitness.
Martial arts training like this is appropriate for any student that is willing to focus and work hard. I don't expect my students to be in tip-top shape. I even work with students who cannot participate in regular exercise programs due to their physical limitations. But I do ask my students to come to all of my lessons and work as hard as they can while they are there. Transforming your life and thinking differently about your body and your mind takes a significant amount of dedication and work. It's not a program for the lazy, by any means. In fact, lazy students are likely not to see any benefits at all.
When my students apply themselves and begin to put those lessons to work in their lives, they see amazing benefits. Many of my students report that they feel more confident at work, and they're more certain of their power and value. They can discuss what they want, and put together plans to make those things happen. When students feel powerful and unified, they just become better communicators. They don't hide their true feelings. Students begin to communicate with ease, and they find their relationships with family members and friends improve as a result. These benefits can persist for years, as long as students keep learning and working.
