From A Non-Achiever To An Achiever

By Paige Thompson

Think of the old days at school. You will recall classmates who started like a house on fire and just sort of faded at the end of the term. The reason is always the same, that their interest waned and they cannot sustain their intensity. On reflection, this does not only happen at school but in life in general. People never run out of excuses for their inability to finish things that they started with so much promise and enthusiasm. These people can be collectively called the non-achievers or under achievers and they end up being whiners, blaming everybody and everything except themselves.

On the other side, we find some stars, who finish the most difficult work finding different ways and overcoming insurmountable obstacles. Why this difference? Almost always, the under-achiever will have a hot start, eager to do everything all at once, but just as quickly his interest would tapersoff and soon he will be just standing around doing nothing and making all sorts of excuses and complaining that things never work out as they should. Whereas the achievers don't show enthusiasm, but it seems that they are studying the situation.

After some study, they plan out the way to finish the task and then begin. They stop only after finishing it. What will be immediately apparent is their confidence in their ability to do overcome all adversities.

Don't let your disappointment get to the surface. Don't show any expression but understanding on your face. The impression that you want to give is that you are the friend and not the enemy. You have to impress upon them that you sympathize with their predicament.

The time will be ripe to try to reverse things. Give them a small task and monitor the progress. This time, be ready to act once you notice a weakening in their resolve. You should intervene immediately and if necessary provide direct support emphasizing that failure is not an option, and that it always felt better to have tried than not to have tried at all. If you do it often enough, they will soon see the error of their ways and see things in your light. When the transformation is complete theirs will be a case study for the other underachievers. There are non-achievers, underachievers or losers, call them whatever you want but the fact is that they are with us and will always be with us. Whatever their failings are, they deserve help and sympathy and not derision.
