Organizing Your Way to Amazingly High Productivity

By Carrie Pepper

One key to organization is to do it daily. If you keep up on your organizational tasks, you will never fall behind. Admit it, when your office and desk are buried under papers and files, you're discouraged and distracted. Here are some simple ways to stay ahead of the game and keep your productivity level high.

Take some time to determine exactly what you want - and need - in your work space. If you can't figure out just how to organize your work space or desk, clear everything off all flat surfaces. Clean it well with a nice, gentle cleanser and then sit back and ponder the situation. Less is usually better and you may be surprised what you discover.

Do you spend a lot of time on the phone? Do you have a user-friendly headset? Is your phone set up in a convenient spot so you can reach it easily? How about a notepad? I hate to admit it, but as a freelance writer, I've found myself - on more than one occasion - looking around for something to write on. How many of us have scribbled an important number down on an envelope or scrap of paper? Get a notepad (or a stack of them) and keep them at the ready.

Get rid of the clutter and your productivity will soar. Look underneath your desk and see what unnecessary things you have stashed under there. Do you really need that old monitor or those boxes? Check out online education courses in organizational strategies or you might even want to teach a class at your local college to share the tips you've found useful.

In order to be the most productive, you must be able to focus on the task at hand. Start with the basics and write that task or goal down in front of you on a note card. Then, look hard at it and determine whether what you are doing at any given moment is getting you closer to that goal, or leading you astray? If you can start there, you'll be able to naturally organize because all the things that don't belong will blow away like chaff in the wind and the things that are the most important will rise to the surface and put you on the road to maximum productivity.
