The Bureau of African Affairs is an agency operating within the United States Department of State that is basically answerable for advising the Secretary of State on matters of Sub-Saharan Africa.
The agency was established in the year 1958 has been pushing towards the achievement of its general agency mission which is to "shape and sustain a peaceful, prosperous, just, and democratic world and foster conditions for equilibrium and progress for the American people and people everywhere."
In accordance with this mission, the Bureau of African Affairs has recently established the Women in Public Service Project wherein it intends to build a generation of women leaders who will be prepared to invest in their countries and communities, offer leadership services to the government, and work towards the potential of revolutionizing the way global solutions are developed.
The programs attempts to create training, mentoring and networking possibilities for emerging and aspiring women leaders in the field of public service since the bureau believes that the participation of women leaders is very much necessary in addressing a wide range of challenges in the society at present.
The activities and initiatives included under the program will target the following objectives:
a) Challenging the global community to identify, create, and advance the next generation of women who have made a commitment to public service.
b) Bringing together leaders, educators and public servants from all over the world; including members of private and nonprofit organizations.
c) Identifying and addressing the hurdles that stop more women from pursuing careers in public service and political leadership.
d) Exploring creative solutions that will improve the number of young women who aim to pursue a career in public service.
The Bureau of African Affairs will award a funding amount of $60,000 to financially support the activities covered within the Fostering International Research on Women in Public Service Programme.
The establishments and setups that'll be considered eligible to submit an application under this program are the following:
a) Public and State Controlled Institutions of Higher Education
b) Nonprofit organizations
c) Private Institutions of Higher Education
d) People who are actually capable of carrying out the activities contained in the program.
