Track your progress towards your goals

By Barbra Sundquist

The start of the new year is a common time to reflect and assess where you are, where you've been, and how this is affecting where you want to go. This kind of reflection is a common characteristic of highly successful people.

There are many ways to track progress, but they all have one common feature: they must be done consistently in order to have the most benefit.

If you feel intimidated by a blank book that's sold as a "journal," blog it. Blogging is a good way to put your thoughts down and out there in cyberspace. There are lots of places where you can start a blog for free: www.blogger.com is one of my favorites.

One quick and easy way to track your progress is to use one of the many online or mobile apps that are now available. For example, one that I like for tracking fitness goals is www.myfitnesspal.com.

Just as important as tracking ongoing progress, is assessing your progress at regular intervals. Remember to have multiple assessment criteria; don't just measure one thing. For example, if your goal is to improve your fitness level, you'll want to asses your cardio and flexibility, in addition to strength.

Another time to reflect and consider is when you've hit a stumbling block. If you've lost sight of your reason for achieving your goal, reassess now and get back on track. The most important success factor in any big endeavor is consistency. Just doing the work, even when you encounter stumbling blocks. Don't overlook the importance of support: a buddy or life coach can be a tremendous asset in helping you overcome those bumps along the way.

Regardless of how you assess and consider your goals and your path to success, it's important that you do. Most things can do with a bit of tweaking along the way, and that also applies to the goals we set for ourselves.
