What Does A Game Developer Do?

By Clare Westwood

Working As A Game Developer

Games developers create and produce computer games, handheld games, arcade games, online games and mobile games. The work of a games developer entails designing art and animation for the games as well as programming them.

The games development industry is very fast moving and the industry as a whole is worth millions of pounds. The creation of a game from the initial idea to the finished product can take anywhere up to three years depending on the format. There can be up to two hundred developers working on one game at the same time. Games creation involves lots of different stages such as creating the idea, designing the game manual, deciding how the game will work, creating the audio and testing it.

The role of a games developer includes a broad range of tasks and there is the option to specialise. Areas developers often choose to specialise in include quality assurance, programmers, audio engineering, artistic design, animation, and special effects.

Tasks vary on the area you work in and the type of corporation you work for but typically they consist of; developing designs and ideas, generating storyboards and presenting them, creating visuals. Using animation software, producing audio work, programming the game itself, troubleshooting and working as part of a busy team.

Due to the games industry being ever growing and increasingly popular it is an excellent area to work in for those who want to find a career with longevity. The varied task list along with seeing the end product means that the role is very rewarding at the end.

If you are looking to move into a games developer role you may want to register with a specialist Information Technology recruiter who can match your skills and interests to relevant jobs in your area.
