Strikeforce's Upcoming Portland Event Features Two Title Fights

By Rod Bourgoine

Strikeforce will be presenting an evening packed with high intensity mixed martial arts bouts on July 14 in Portland. The main event of the evening will be a bout between the current middleweight champ Luke Rockhold and Tim Kennedy.

Rockhold, who holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, won his current title in September of 2011 against Ronaldo Souza and successfully defended the title in January against Keith Jardine via TKO. Rockhold was scheduled to fight Kennedy during this bought, but Kennedy was unable to fight due to injury.

In addition to his career in mixed martial arts, Kennedy currently serves as a Green Beret in the U.S. Army. Kennedy has an impressive Strikeforce record, but has not fought a bout since the Lawler versus Kennedy fight in July, 2011, where he won via unanimous decision.

The main card of the event also includes a title match in the now-vacant welterweight division between Tyron Woodley and Nate Marquardt. Woodley, a former wrestler at the University of Missouri, was named Strikeforce's 2010 Rising Star of the Year. Woodley is undefeated in his Strikeforce career, his last bout was a split decision in January against Jordan Mein. Nate Marquardt, a former UFC middleweight fighter, brings his considerable talents to the hexagon with a record of 31 wins and 12 losses. His last bout was at UFC 128 in March of 2011 against Dan Miller, which he took in a unanimous decision.

Other fights during the event will include a match-up between Roger Gracie and Keith Jardine. Gracie, grandson of Carlos Gracie and a second-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, has won several fights at the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, 8 matches at the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship and has an 4-1 MMA record. This will be Jardine's third Strikeforce event, having previously competing in UFC, Pancrase and KOTC. Jardine also competed as a professional boxer and is known for his unique fighting style.

Other events include a middleweight bout between Robbie Lawler and Lorenz Larkin. Larkin is making his debut in the middleweight division, having previously fought as a light heavyweight. Boxing and Kung Fu are considered Larkin's strongest skills, and he was undefeated as a light heavyweight. He also has a 5-0 amateur boxing record. Lawler holds a 19-8-1 MMA record. His last fight was in January against Adlan Amagov, which he won by TKO.

The event will be held at the Rose Garden Arena in downtown Portland and will air live on the East Coast on Showtime at 7 p.m. The West Coast will be on tape delay.
