By Terrie Joyner

A grapple rake attachment can be used by operators to grab, lift, drag and place materials in an easy manner. In general it consists in two heavy-duty cylinders that can be capable to produce an impressive clamping force, assuring that after the material is grabbed, it will not let go. Industrial machine manufacturers are continuing to produce new versions and styles of grapple rakes, in order to accommodate to their customers changing needs.

Having a rake as tractor accessory can be one of the most useful tools. This powerful equipment can be used with success to handle various loads as brush, debris, rocks, concrete or heavy logs. The resistance of this tool is given by the steel used in the structure, that will make it resistant in front of tough demands. The large opening of jaws is also useful to pick up large items, as for example hay bales.

Grapple rakes can be used in various domains and for various purposes. Their utility allows to be used not only to pick up materials, but also to transport and sort them. Therefore these tools are having applicability not only in the construction industry, but are also useful to clear woods, to rehabilitate pastures, and much more.

With an easy handling design, these accessories are ideal to pick up irregularly shaped objects encountered in various industries. It can be also used with success for landscaping and for other invasive applications. Build up of high strength steel, they are designed to resist bending and to increase the durability.

Professional items should be easy to work with and very resistant when dealing with heavy loads. A very important aspect is how large the opening is. When the opening is wider, more objects can be handled. These accessories are usually having an opening that can range from 50" to 73". A large round bale can be picked up with products when the opening is maximum.

These accessories are now available in various dimensions, weights and models. In general a manufacturer will classify these tools according with their weight. Therefore these can be included in the light, medium or heavy category. The weight of this type of equipment can range between 367 pounds and 1190 pounds and should be adapted to the size of the tractor. The ideal weight is when this is less than 50% from the pick-up capacity.

Hoses are in general included as accessories on the majority of these tools. Grapples are ideal to pick up various objects and materials, but cannot be used for digging. The 6" distance between rake tines was calculated as sufficient to lift small materials, and to sift the dirt at the same time.

The single or double grapple rakes are both useful depending on the activity to be performed. For example the single grapple is preferred for picking up hay bales, while the double grapple is more useful in case of uneven loads. Therefore, before choosing to buy one, it is important to know what will be the scope of use and the weight of materials to be picked up.
