Hi, Brian Sloan here. Did I see cigarettes in the hands of some of you? Yep, I believe I did. Well, should I preach to you? Actually, I'm a pastor. I mean I possess an ordination certificate and can perform weddings and all types of cool things. Aren't you impressed? Yeah, right. Didn't think so. But I love doing what I do. But certainly I digress.....back to the cigarettes ...Not going to preach... I'm just not going to let myself be judgmental towards you if you're a cigarette smoker. You understand why? It's because I have way too many faults in my life to judge you for smoking.
Right here's what I think. If Jesus himself joined us in a meeting place filled with cigarette smokers and non-smokers, He would certainly be more concerned about some of the under the hood and heart problems or (secret transgressions possibly) as much as he would be with a person who has a cigarette smoking problem. So, I'm not going to bust on my friends that smoke. Sorry.
Am I speaking up for smoking cigarettes? Heck no! (Remember I have to say stuff like "heck" due to the fact that I'm a clergyman). I prefer that people would stop smoking- not due to the fact that I think they are some large evildoer compared to me - not because it smells bad (and it does) but, due to the fact that it literally gets rid of wonderful individuals. We know that. Annually, an approximated 443,000 individuals perish prematurely from smoking or direct exposure to secondhand smoke. Apart from that, yet another 8.6 million people live with major illnesses caused by smoking.
If you go into the medical professionals office with a dreadful heart disease or a simple ingrown toenail, exactly what's the first thing he's going to say? Uh huh. Quit smoking. So, unlike various financial or political policy debates, the manmade global warming debate, etc.,, the dispute over smoking has actually long been decided. Smoking is bad. Reeeeally bad. So, as a pastor, no - not just as a minister, however as friend and/or family member of those who smoke, how can we help to motivate our friends to give it up?
The buddies I've had who smoke normally had a desire to give it up, however, just couldn't seem to get there. However, to quit you have to do some simple things. Here are some proven ideas to help.
Decide. Draw the line in the sand and do it. Period. I do not mean a crash detox, however, determine that it WILL CERTAINLY TAKE PLACE.
Partner with another smoker that wants to stop. This is an excellent way to do it. You have an edge when you start with an accountability partner who is experiencing the same things you are.
Receive help from your doctor. There are a heck of a lot of people (oops, another pastor curse word) that have succeeded fighting the nicotine desires by using meds like Zyban or Wellbutrin, which is essentially the same thing.
If you start the journey to quit then slip and smoke, don't beat up on yourself. Just get back at it. If your objective is to be free from cigarettes in 2 months, and it takes you six months - there you are! Aren't you still successful?
You can do it. Receive assistance from buddies. Obtain support from your physician, and you could get motivation from people like me. Don't permit smoking cigarettes to continuously damage you. You're worth too much to us all! You're worth too much to God! You can definitely do this!
Choose. Team up with a friend if possible. Get advice and even an appropriate drug from your Doctor. And..Get up if you fall! Blessings to you!
