Help Me Study By Taking Action On My Distraction

By Lachlan Haynes

We can all agree that the ability to use your time smartly, be incredibly productive when studying, and having sound organizational and time management skills are tremendously important elements of being successful in your studies.

So what value can you put on an uncomplicated and easy to implement technique that will instantly increase how productive you are? It's priceless isn't it? The only questions you should be asking are "How much time can I save myself" and "What is the technique?"

The good news is that even though the technique I am about to share with you will have a major impact on how productive you are it is still very easy to use and very easy to understand. Now how often can you say that?

A productivity guru named David Allen developed what is now known as the "Two Minute Rule". The two minute rule is exactly as it sounds and it works in the following way.

When a distraction arises and threatens to soak up your precious time (and distractions are everywhere) you simply ask yourself: "Can I handle this in two minutes or less?"

If you can address and resolve the interruption in two minutes or less then go for it. Spend two minutes or less immediately taking the action required to handle whatever it is. Take charge and knock the interruption on the head straight away. However, if it can't be handled in two minutes or less then write it down on a to-do list and come back to it later when you have more time to address it.

That is the essence of the two minute rule. Did I tell you it was simple? I kept that promise didn't I!

Now even though this may seem like an easy concept that's a bit too simple to work - it's also a very powerful tool if you can stick to it. The fact is, distractions are absolutely everywhere (think about TV, cell phones and your computer for a start!) and they constantly eat up our time which in turn leads to us being less productive. This is not what we need when we are desperately trying to get some study done.

A great benefit of the two minute rule is that you are quickly and effectively taking care of any distractions as they occur, and you are also creating a new rule that you can live your life by - "If I can't resolve it in two minutes or less I'm not addressing it until the important stuff is done!" By doing this, you have created a brilliant new habit.

A secondary benefit of the two minute rule is that you have organized and prioritized a to-do list. Instead of just addressing every distraction as it arises, you ignore those distractions that are going to take longer than two minutes - but because you have them written down as something to complete later you have instantly become more organized.

Simple idea? You bet. Will it increase your productivity and help eliminate distractions? It sure will. Will you become an organizational guru if you use this technique? You just might! When you handle distractions as soon as they arise (either by adding them to a list or taking care of them in two minutes or less) you will find that you start achieving far more in far less time - the essence of productivity. Give it a go for a week, a month and then a year. You will be very surprised by what you can achieve in just two minutes or less!
