Due to the relatively small size of the defibrillator, these devices have gained popularity in use in places where many people gather together such as hotels and social halls. Their use however requires some advanced first aid training in defibrillation. This is because the device delivers a shock straight to the organ, making it dangerous when placed in inexperienced hands.

With this in mind, it is important that any building that houses such a device should have someone trained in how to properly use it along with other first aid procedures. Not all countries have training programs for this function. Given the large number of people at risk however, it should be made a matter of public policy to make this a priority.

They monitor the patient's heart rate constantly and when it falls out of the normal range of 60 to 100 beats a minute, sends out an electric shock to regularize it. This is different from a pacemaker that constantly regulates the heart rate.
