Florida License Plates Can Signify What You Value

By Rena Hudson

Florida license plates can be specially designed for you. This means you can put a phrase or combination of letters and numbers on the plate that you like. It also means you can have a specialty design for your plate if you wish to support a certain idea or cause. As you drive around the state you may notice the remarkable variety of different plates that cars might display.

The standard Florida plate features a map style image of the state with an orange next to it and the phrase "Sunshine State" on the plate. Specialty versions can come in many different forms. The designs can vary and the slogan might be something other than "Sunshine State" on the specialty ones, but it will still say Florida on the plate.

The cost of a specialty plate that you buy partially funds a charity or organization affiliated with the idea expressed on the plate. For example, if your plate says "Sportman's National Land Trust", part of the proceeds from purchasing the plate will go to the Sportman's National Land Trust. In this way, you are not only sharing your ideas with people but you are putting your money to work on behalf of the cause.

Wildlife preservation groups and other environmental organizations are popular groups for Sunshine state residents to support. Messages like "save the manatee" or "save wild dolphins" are quite popular. People who buy these plates are donating some of the money to preserve marine wildlife. The money may go to educational efforts or habitat preservation for example.

Popular charity messages include support for child abuse prevention or autism awareness. Supporting firefighters, scouts or the Red Cross are other possibilities. If you purchase one of these designs you may be sure that you are helping a worthwhile charity do work around Florida.

People who attend one of the state's fine universities or alumni from one of the state's schools can find images to demonstrate their school spirit. Whether you are a gator, a hurricane or a Seminole, you can wear your school colors on the bumper of your car or truck. The state has specialty plates for three dozen schools so even if you attended a smaller college you can find a plate to honor your alma mater.

Sports fans can also find plates to signify their favorite pro sports team. Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Florida Marlins or Tampa Bay Bucs are all popular choices. There is nothing like pulling up to a tailgate party with your teams logo on the back of your set of wheels.

Florida license plates can symbolize your values. You can advertise to other drivers your support for a worthy charity, a school you attended or a natural area you would like to see preserved. In addition, you can put a customized name upon your plate as long as the name you add is not offensive to other motorists. The state may reject applications it considers offensive or that use foul language.
