Learning More About Precision Machining

By Rena Hudson

The mechanical repair industry has been transformed by the current Precision Machining procedures available in the field. The lathe machine is one of the indispensable tools in a mechanical engineering workshop. It is popularly used for filling procedures as well as fabricating threaded shafts from a raw metal bar. If it is combined with additional tools, the machine can do a wide range of fabrication operations.

A hole could be drilled on a mounted work piece if a drill bit fastened on the turning head jaws is slowly advanced forwards on a stationary material. Engineering calipers or a micrometer screw gauge are some of the most accurate measuring implements that will guarantee precise dimensioning. This machine was initially developed for shaping cylindrical metal stock for industrial use.

Many classes of lathing machines are available today, the naming being based on the manner in which they operate. It is commonplace for heavy duty installations to be mounted on floors with industrial grade concrete to avoid destruction by resulting shock waves. Though most of them are run from stationary electrical motors, diesel engines could be coupled to smaller varieties to allow them to be used in distant areas without a reliable electricity connection.

To make the lathes adaptable to different projects, many manufacturers provide additional extensions. The bed covers the largest area and provides space for the operator and supports ways that aid in positioning the tail stock. On the left hand side will be located the headstock, along with a pulley, belt or gear mechanism from the motor or engine. Somewhere on the side of the gear housing is a selection lever for setting the number of revolutions per minute.

Precise results are only achievable if the lathe is properly lubricated and maintained on a regular basis. When working in the fields, the appliances must be covered with a tarpaulin to protect them from dust and moisture. A dusty environment will call for regular changing of the lubricant to get rid of suspended particles.

As with most industrial setups, risks are always present in the lathing room and workers must be trained to take responsibility for safety. An operator should discard all forms of jewelry and neckties before starting on his assignments for the day. Do not attempt to adjust a setting while the motor is running to avoid personal injury.

Operators must display professionalism at all times when working the lathes. The emergency stop should be strategically placed and easy to locate in case of an emergency. Heavy leather gloves are a must have to avoid sustaining injuries from the chips and filings deposited around the bed and on the floor. A work bench must be provided for placing tools such as the chuck spanner when working instead of placing them on the ways.

Cutting tools should be properly positioned on the tool holder to make contact at the right angle during Precision Machining. The machines used today have evolved from the conventional role of fashioning cylinders into more complex roles. One of their greatest capabilities is cutting out threads of a specified pitch for worm and wheel drive units. They could also be used to slowly rotate a worn out shaft as it is filled with an arc weld before smoothening its surface.
