San Diego Activities That Will Push Your Limits

By Rod Bourgoine

San Diego offers plenty of seashore for those who enjoy splashing around in the waves and there are excellent shops and museums to enjoy, but if you crave a bit more adventure and excitement, you probably want to spend your time with some more extreme activities. San Diego also offers plenty of fun adventures for those who prefer a bit of danger or intensity along with their fun. Here are just a few examples of some activities that you might enjoy.

With such proximity to the ocean, there are many excellent options for water sports, from parasailing to waterskiing to scuba diving. La Jolla has some fascinating sea caves and several companies offer kayaking adventures in and around the caves. Cliff jumping in La Jolla is also a popular activity for extremists, but it is important to note that while there are some great jumps, the sport itself is illegal. If these suggestions sound too pedestrian, you could opt to try something fun like open ocean shark dives. Typically you will be swimming with Blue sharks and Makos, and while the latter can be aggressive, you probably will be perfectly safe in your shark-resistant cage.

Surfing isn't always an extreme sport, but it definitely is when you are talking about big wave surfing. The Cortes Bank is one of the premier breaks in the world with waves on par with Maverick's and Waimea Bay. This spot isn't easy to reach, as it's a 100-mile trip off the San Diego coast, but if you love big waves, you need to try this extreme location. If you can't make the trip, the waves at Trestles and Black's Beach are some of the area's best.

In addition to a myriad of water-related sports, there are tons of in-the-sky adventures including flying in an authentic fighter jet. You will enjoy twists, turns and stunt maneuvers as well as engaging in up to a half dozen dogfights with other aircraft. One company actually rents out jet packs to customers and they soar about 25 to 30 feet above the ground and you can also soar down to earth and dive into the sea while wearing your jet pack. Of course, like any good destination, the San Diego area has several excellent skydiving schools, so if you wish to jump out of an airplane, you're all set.

San Diego has great scenery, but unlike many other areas in Southern California, mountain ranges aren't really part of the view. However, there are still some great options out there for those who enjoy climbing. Mission Trails Regional Park is a great centrally located park and it offers Mission Gorge, which has some great rock climbing areas. If you love bouldering, practice and improve your skills at Mt. Woodsen, which has an immense amount of different boulders to tackle. Of course, there are plenty of indoor facilities with rock climbing walls, and this can be a good option for practicing on the approximately nine days each year when the weather is inclement.

If you love extreme sports, it would be wise to consider some extreme training. At The Arena MMA, you can train just as the professional fighters of mixed martial arts train. In addition to classes in Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai and boxing, The Arena offers a CrossFit gym and has developed its own intense strength and conditioning program called FightBuilt. This system was design especially for combat sports and it is about as extreme as it gets.
