The Importance Of Radiological Decontamination

By Dora Reed

Biological, radiological, chemical and nuclear decontamination is the removal of these materials from an equipment or humans. The main objective of this process is to lessen the radiation contaminants in the preparation of the protective storage. Decontamination can be carried out by use of the electrochemical, chemical and mechanical means. Like other materials, humans can also be contaminated. Once these contaminants are not removed, it can cause death to a certain person. Thus, decontamination is very important.

Decontamination is defined as the process of removing dangerous materials from a certain area. This method is used in reducing a dose that every worker receives from surfaces or components. There are some radiological decontamination procedures have been used to recycle and reuse a specific material.

The process can be easy and simple. It is like removing or taking off your shirt. Take a shower and shampoo your hair. It is very simple as that. So, no chemicals at all. The radiation is usually carried by the dust particles. Always remember that air is not a radioactive, components are. Thus, it is simple as washing off the dust particles.

A rain is also essential during or after a radiation leak. The rain cleans the dust from the diluting air. Once the dry air runoff through the air, then it could be a bad sign. By the way, a dusty cloth can also be decontaminated by just washing them. However, it also depends on a certain amount of the radiation detected. But, if you think that they are contaminated, they must be disposed properly. You may them in plastic bags and take them to the authorities if possible.

It is important to know about when to decide if someone should be decontaminated. In some power plants, workers are usually wearing dosimeters. This is an attire that record the level of exposure and the environment is monitored for any radioactivity level. This way, they will be able to know the amount of contaminants in their clothing and they can decide immediately, whether to dispose their clothes or not.

According the experts, this is a situation where harmful condition takes place. This is because, it can also affect your internal system. All the bad particles on clothes and to your skin can be washed off. However, once the contaminants are absorbed into your body, then you will be affected. That is why, the authorities usually ensure that most markets are considering a good food sanitation for the safety of people.

Once the skin has been exposed to liquid agents, then it also means that you have to be decontaminated quickly within a minute. Time is really a factor in this process. You may remove the particles through using talcum powder, soap, flour and water.

If a certain patient is affected with a contamination, it must be treated quickly. The contaminants should be eliminated before it is too late. This could transfer to others and may be exposed to other people.

Proper health care is needed for patients. This is important so they can recover immediately. At first, you cannot say that wearing protective gears can keep you away from harm. Since, there are instances that cannot be prevented, you just have to be careful always. Prevention is better than cure, as they say.
