The Various Forms Of Martial Arts Austin

By Harriet Porter

The techniques used in combat in the world are varied. They are referred to as martial arts styles and can either be traditional or modern. This notwithstanding, all of them have unique when the method they use in teaching fighting is considered. It also is very important to consider that there is a significant level of overlap in the various methods. When looking to participate in martial arts Austin residents have various options they can consider.

Stand up techniques are designed to teach people the way to defend themselves when they are standing, just like the name suggests. They make use of blocks, kicks, elbows, knees and punches. It should however be remembered that the level to which every aspect gets taught depends on a specific style as well as the instructor. Besides teaching techniques of defense, they also teach some aspects of fighting. Some of the styles of striking are kung fu, kickboxing and karate. Grappling techniques mostly focus on teaching practitioners how to take opponents to the ground. This enables the individual to use submission hold in ending fights or achieve a dominant position.

There are throwing or takedown styles. It is the norm for combat to start from a standing position. The best way of getting fights to the ground is by using takedowns and throws. This is where throwing styles come in handy. All the techniques of grappling will teach takedowns as well. There is thus a significant level of overlap. Some of the throwing styles include judo, aikido and hapkido.

The majority of the techniques mentioned make use of weapons. That aside, there are martial arts procedures that mainly focus on the use of weapons. Kendo and kali are in this category. The persons that focus on low impact styles are more interested in techniques of fitness, breathing and the spiritual side. This is even as all the techniques were used for combat at one point.

One thing that is for sure is that most martial arts techniques utilize methods found in others. Of late, there are schools that have decided to teach the various techniques collectively to come up with hybrid styles. These allow for grappling, stand up fighting, submissions and throws. MMA and shoot-fighting are some hybrid styles.

Aikido is performed by flowing with the motion of the attacker and not opposing it head on. It is a grappling art that originated in Japan. It requires less physical strength because the practitioner directs the momentum of the attacker with entering and turning motions. This is followed by joint locks and throws.

Created in 1882, judo is relatively modern compared to most other techniques. It is aimed at subduing opponents with grappling maneuvers or using joint locks to throw them to the ground. Thrusts and strikes are only allowed when it is pre-arranged. They will however not be allowed during free practice or competitions.

Hapkido originated from Korea and makes use of joint locks, punches and kicks. Weapons such as swords, canes and staff are also used but their level of emphasis is varied. The technique mostly focuses on footwork, body positioning and use of circular motions. These are used to gain leverage. Aikido and hapkido are similar due to sharing common history but have differing philosophies.
