Ways To Assist The Disaster Relief Ministry

By Enid Hinton

The times we leave in are uncertain and fraught with disasters and unexplained occurrences. We hear news of Tsunamis, Earthquakes and Hurricanes on a regular basis. The loss of life and property when this occurs are of epic proportions. This problem is compounded with those caused as a result of human mistakes and negligence. The Disaster relief ministry efforts strive to mitigate the effects of these situations. The disasters tear away at the very fabric of our societies causing them to be emotionally and physically scarred for generations. They leave nothing but destruction and ruins in their wake.

Prayer is a very powerful tool that is at your disposal. Human beings since the beginning of time have placed their faith in powers bigger than them. They have also placed their problems and fears. Prayer is not only so that God can help the families affected overcome the trouble in their lives. It can also make you feel better about yourself. In your own way, you are showing concern and solidarity with the victims of these disasters.

In disaster situations they are people who are always who may need blood urgently. You can assist by donating blood to these relief agencies. This you do not have to do only at the time of crisis. Be proactive and go to any of the blood donation centers that are around you.

Another way of assisting the people who are affected is volunteering to work in the crisis areas. This is a decision you have to think through carefully. Some of the places you are bound to be sent can be dangerous or volatile. Therefore understand that your decision is a personal sacrifice for the well-being of others.

Raising funds for those victims is another way of being helpful. Most relief agencies require lots of money to operate effectively. These sources of finance come from well-wishers and sponsors. You can mobilize the people in your neighborhood to pledge funds to these agencies as a worthy cause. If possible organize a fund raiser and ensure all the money collected goes to the disaster victims.

The disaster victims need items such as food and clothes. You can donate these items to them. This can come from the excess you have or purchase them. Once you have done this make sure you contact the relief organizations and task them to distribute them to the victims.

Once the organizations have been mobilized they are a number of key decisions they have to make. Before this is done they have to first get the facts on the ground. If it is a warzone they have to ascertain whether it is secure enough for their volunteers to operate.

Ensure the notes you send are in an easily understood language that anyone can understand. You can send the notes through the church missions, the relief organizations, schools and newspapers. The message on the note should also be clear and straight to the point. Avoid talking in generalities.
