The Six Benefits Of Boronizing

By April Briggs

If a company that specializes in certain metals wants to enhance what they have for a particular purpose, there are certain processes that need to take place. One of these processes is known as boronizing or boriding. This is where metals are infused with boron in order to make it more efficient. Here is a look at the various ways in which this method is useful.

Even though a metal might seem quite hard on the surface, it can be subject to wear. Many times objects that are scratch repeatedly or that have been dented in any way are experiencing wear. Boriding is one way of using boron to harden the metal so that it can withstand this type of wear and tear that takes place on a regular basis.

Under certain conditions, it is important for metals to be hardened so that they can be used more effectively. This means that metals like steel will be able to withstand extreme pressure from heat and can stand up to being used all the time. This applies parts that are used in machines that are used every day. If they are not hardened in some way they will not last.

There is also increased thermal stability. Metals can melt when they are subjected to high temperatures. So if they are going to be used for cooking as in pots, and baking utensils, it is important for them to be stable and able to withstand high temperatures. In addition, these metal pots and pans should be able to distribute the heat evenly in order to be of the best use.

Corrosion is something that occurs over a long period of time causing destruction and harm to metals. This is due to certain chemicals like acids that are constantly attacking the metal even though on the surface everything seems harmless. This is why rusting takes place, but it can be slowed down even further by creating blends in metals that can make them more resistant to acids.

When two metals move against each other with a significant amount of force, this is known as friction. This type of movement can also cause wear in the metal and this is common in machines that are used every day whether they are in the home or in a factory. The coefficient of friction is a figure that is used to show how much friction occurs between two objects. The lower the number the better.

When a person thinks of the welding of metals, heat usually comes to mind as the method used to accomplish this. However, cold welding is where metals stick to each other not in the heat but in a vacuum. This might not seem like a problem, but this could mean trouble for those who travel in space or for objects like satellites that are used for a variety of purposes.

Machines used to extract oil from the ground and those used in agriculture, benefit from the boriding of metals. This process helps to make the jobs in these fields more efficient due to the advantages explained above. This is why metals always undergo a series of processes before being placed on the market.
