Mixed Martial Arts For All Ages

By Rab Saris

Everybody was Kung-Fu fighting, and now mixed martial arts (MMA) is growing in popularity. But I feel like singing Carl Douglas's line "In fact it was a little bit frightening." Has MMA fighting gone too far? Should we sit and watch it on TV? Should kids be involved?

The deaths of Douglas Dedge in MMA competition or Sammy Vasquez from an MMA sanctioned fight, answer the question of MMA going too far as a spectator sport. The sight of Royce Gracie using his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to lay his opponents on their backs and pound their faces, just does not strike me as good sportsmanship.

This is like a nightmare where every boxer has the personality of Mike Tyson. I suppose if you put mixed martial arts gloves on Tyson he would fit right in.

The place for MMA fighting is where it used to be, in our military training. Mixed martial arts were around before Bruce Lee. Soldiers were trained to do whatever it takes to kill an enemy. It is called kill or be killed.

Special forces is an MMA academy that serves a good purpose. But battlefield skills used in a street fight by rival thugs is not so glorious; neither is a MMA London or MMA New York event.

Illinios gun-control laws would be a good reason to learn MMA as a means of defence. If the thugs of Chicago ever wanted a piece of your family your kids might have some defense.

An MMA acadamy can be good to teach your child self-control and respect as well as helping them to be physically healthier. The spirit of things is what is in question.

But when blood and gore become the entertainment rather than the sport, the moves, and gentlemanly conduct after the closing bell, then society is in big trouble. Do you really want your kids hoping somebody gets hurt?

MMA training is a great, the competion is bad. Kids need to learn form, whether boxing, wrestling, karate, or kickboxing.

The martial arts shoes, uniforms and the belts earned is great. Teach them to win but not to cripple.

The strength and skill gained can be used to defend their families or to be furthered by combat martial arts to defend their country. Do you know what I'm talking about Grasshopper?
