Couture Vs Nogiuera At UFC 102

By Phil Janke

This weekends UFC features two legends in MMA. Randy "The Natural" Couture faces off against Antonio "Minotauro" Noguiera in what is a rebound match for each fighter. Each fighter has recently fought in a title bout and lost, but this will be the chance they both need to start working their way into position for a shot at the current champ, Brock Lesnar.

Randy Couture is the most tenured MMA fighter in UFC history and he stands to face the greatest test of his career. Many say he is past his prime, or that he has faced his toughest competition and it has taken its toll. In his latest fight, Couture was knocked out by heavy handed giant Brock Lesnar in the second round. But, prior to that he posted 3 of 4 wins over current champs or defending champs in the heavy weight category.

In three of four of Minotauro's last fights he has defeated Tim Sylvia, Josh Barnett and Heath Herring. All three of his opponents were rated in the top 5 of their divisions when he fought and defeated them. His latest bout was a TKO at the hands of Frank Mir, who surprised everyone, including Minotauro, by using a stand up attack against him.

Noguiera has a record that a champion would be proud of with 31 wins, 5 defeats and 1 draw. He has also beat one of the toughest UFC fighters each time he has fought him, Heath Herring.

If you compared each fighter's style, the bout would favor Noguiera. Having a black belt in BJJ and a great dirty boxing repertoire as well puts Antonio into a different realm than Couture. Noguiera is known for being a slow starter but Couture isn't heavy handed enough for that to make much of a difference.

Known for his tough chin and incredible ability to take a beating and still pull out the victory, Minotauro will be very tough for an over the hill Couture to defeat.

Each of these fighters lacks the ability to really end the fight in knock out fashion so you can anticipate this fight going into the later rounds and probably going to a decision. Noguiera is younger so he should have more stamina if that happens, thus taking a big edge over Couture.

Although Couture has had a history of being the underdog in many of his fights, and still winning, this bought will be an uphill battle all of the way.
