Good Safety Habits

By Pierre Levingston

Many burglaries can be avoided by using common sense security habits. Criminals look for home owner's lack of attention to security details when picking out targets. If you establish some good safety habits now it can really be beneficial to your home safety.

Establish the habit of keeping your yard shrubs and trees trimmed to an appropriate height. You should be able to see outside your windows without shrubs blocking it. Thieves can use shrubs to hide behind or climb on when trying to enter your home, so remembering to keep them trimmed is important.

Establish a habit of locking up your items in your garage or storage shed. Don't let them lay out in the yard. Ladders can be used by burglars to climb to an upper story, and other tools can be used to gain access inside your home.

Establish the habit of checking your alarm system constantly. Check it every time before you leave your home and before you go to bed at night. A lot of break-ins happen because the system is not properly checked or turned on.

Establish the habit of locking all of your doors and windows. Be sure to lock your upstairs windows because burglars can still gain access to your home through them. Remember to lock your doors while you are away as well as when you are at home.

Form a habit of using your door's peephole. Its important to know who is at the door before opening it. If you don't know who it is, use your door chain.

Establish a habit of updating your security system's software. Maintaining your alarm system allows it to run more smoothly. It can also improve its performance and help avoid component breakdowns.

There are other great habits that can help protect your home. Start with these ones and once these habits are well established branch out to incorporate other ones. Your efforts will help bring added security to your home.
