Key Concepts In Retail Design

By Helga Gonzales

The most important function of a retail space is to assist the buyers in purchasing the exhibited products without difficulty and to allow the retailer to draw buyers to the goods for effective selling. This is the reason why the design of retail areas and stores, that is the retail design, is comprised of aspects of graphic design, ergonomics and marketing, along with other customary features of interior designing and architecture.

While designing a retail space, it is crucial that the specific needs of that particular retail space are taken into account. Art galleries and supermarkets act as good illustrations of retail spaces that have completely distinct needs for their design. A number of factors need to be considered while developing the design, such as the kind of goods being sold, the level of involvement of shop attendants in the buying process, the number of goods that have to be displayed, and so on. Many a times it is also necessary for customers to be able to test the products, while several other retail environments may only require exhibiting the products. Therefore, the retail design changes based on particular requirements.

Apart from the utilitarian aspects of retail design, the attractiveness of the retail space to the consumer is also extremely important. It is important that the environment of the retail store appears friendly to the buyers so that they are motivated to purchase the items. The design of the retail environment has a large role to play in this and it must include in-store advertising to reinforce the brand so that the likelihood of a sale increases.

Further, the retail space environment should make a lasting impression on the buyers so that they come back to the store and buy more items. A good retail designer will thus pay special attention to the environment of the store and ensure that the customers have an enjoyable and comfortable experience.

To make sure that the retail design is a success, the designer should be aware of basics on optimal utilisation of space, promotion and psychology of the buyers. It is important that the owner of the store understands these concepts in order to communicate the designer about his particular requirements and the retail designer understands them to properly execute as per the needs.

Designing the store interior well is very critical, but there is one other thing that should be taken into consideration. The outside design and appearance of the store should also be appealing to draw buyers to the shop so that they enter and look at the goods.
