Starting Life On Your Own At First Can Be Difficult

By Linda Hubert

So it's time to start living on your own, this can be quite the financial surprise to many. One suggestion to help cut down on the living costs is to get some roommate. Perhaps some friends or some classmates you may know. However, while everyone may get along great there is still the chance that these potential roommates are not clean when it comes to housekeeping.

One of the first things to be established at your new place is hygiene. Hopefully this will be a simple ground rule to lay out that everyone can agree on. Also, be sure to lay out what is acceptable when it comes to cleanliness.

For example, each roommates mess should be restricted to their own room or area. As for the kitchen, bathroom, and other shared areas, there should be a time limit for cleaning your own messes.

Try making a chore schedule that includes everyone. This will be important when it comes to dealing with raw foods or a messy bathroom. It will also help prevent complicating any relationships.

If you are living with people that you have not lived with before, it is important to remember that some of your living habits may have to change. For example, if you like loud music you may need to turn it down as to not upset your other roommates, and it will be expected that they do the same.

Another thing is to make sure you are all clear on ground rules for personal items like dishes, food, and other things. Another important discussion to have is about acceptable behaviors in the house. Having these conversations can avoid a lot of problems in the future.

Make sure to bring up money as well. While it too is an awkward topic, the rent and utility bills still need to be paid and everyone needs to chip in.

One way to make sure everyone is responsible is to assign someone each month to collect the bills and make sure they get paid. Just be sure that the roommate assigned doesn't use the money for personal things.
