Get Firearm Background Check

By Malik Christians

When planning to purchase a firearm, people are going to be required to undergo two things. First is a background check and second is a cooling off period prior to being able to take possession of the firearm. This must be done because of the Brady handgun law which was passed on a national level back in the mid 1990's. Those persons that have been proven to be dishonorably discharged from the military or if they have a felony conviction cannot get a handgun. This background check basically promotes the prevention of those who have a higher tendency to commit a gun related crime from having a weapon for his personal use.

By the time when the law was first passed, the gun store owner was just entitled to have one option, that was to take the person's information down to the local police station and perform a criminal background check on them. But the local police station were only permitted to provide the criminal background if the crime had been committed in their jurisdiction, which made the option not possible anymore. What this really means is that, given a person who had committed a crime in another state and then moved to a new state, when he would try to purchase a gun, there are great chances for him to still get the gun in his possession.

Fortunately, the freedom of information act solved this kind of problem. This is because it made the international databases for criminal records public and so anyone who wanted to could already access them and be able to obtain a person's background record. Well eventually this did not work out either due to the hard work needed just to locate and navigate through this criminal database. More so, you are going to need the person's entire history of residences in order to perform the background check.

Then this is where the firearm background check companies started to rise. What these companies would do is that they take out all of this information, compile it onto their own database, then this will in turn allow you to have access to the information. Having their complete address history or not will not anymore matter here.

Those people who would want to purchase a gun benefited a lot with this, since it made it easier for them. Prior to being able to take possession of the firearm, you must still undergo a cooling off period. This is better though since at least you can be sure and you already know if you qualify to get a gun when you return in after a couple days to pick up your new handgun. Basically, it would be the job of those firearm background check services to supply handgun store owners with the necessary tools to perform a comprehensive criminal background check on any handgun purchase with ease. This is actually one of the services' main goal.
