Use Low Impact Exercise to Lose Weight

By Ashley Houston

We know that diet and exercise are the keys to getting in shape and staying healthy. But for those who have been unable to maintain this lifestyle due to an injury or other life events, it can be very difficult to begin an exercise regime. Don't let the image of a military-style of basic training exercise regime scare you off. There are other ways to exercise.

Popular reality shows portray extremely overweight people being exercised intensely as part of their effort to lose weight. You may watch these shows and believe that is what you need to do to lose weight. Remember though that these people are doing nothing else bu that show - they have more time than you do, and because they are on TV, more commitment to the process. Don't forget that the entertainment value of pushing contestants to their limits often has a hand to play as well.

Slowly getting into low impact exercise without the stress and strain of intense exercise not only helps you lose weight gradually, it is better for you. You'll keep the weight off easier as your body adjusts to the exercise, and you can increase the intensity when you feel ready for it.

Try Walking

One of the healthiest ways to get your body in shape is to take a walk. Walking invigorates every muscle in your body. They only thing that you need is a good pair of sneakers. You don't need to spend a fortune. Choose the style that fits well and cushions your feet.

When the weather is good, grab a friend or neighbor - or even one of the kids - and head out for a walk. The local park or nearest beach will be nice, but even a stroll around the neighborhood will do. Taking someone to talk to keeps you from counting the yards, making the time and distance go much quicker. The mall can be used for a walk in less than agreeable weather - not for shopping, but to walk through. Take in some steps while you're there.

Yoga Works Magic

Another good, low impact activity is yoga. Yoga is more than just simple bending and stretching, although that alone can benefit you enormously. As you delve more deeply into the practice you will discover that it is actually a very intense workout. There are many yoga DVD's available to purchase or rent, so you can work in the privacy of your own home.

Keep Track of Your Food Intake

Although you are now starting to exercise, this does not give you carte blanche to eat whenever you feel like it. Maintain healthy eating habits, stick to three meals and two snacks a day, and keep track of your food intake. You can still have a treat every now and then, but keep it to one cookie, not the whole bag.
