My Carlsbad Dentist Saved the Day

By Anna Grange

I've always brushed every morning and night, knowing that it will keep cavities at bay. Of course, I taught my children to do the same; dental care is critical because your teeth need to last your entire life. Chewing is important! As a nurse, I also know that gingivitis can bring about poor health systemically. Should you get bacteria in your blood stream, it can affect your heart. What I didn't plan on contending with was the moment my Carlsbad dentist told me that my son had eight cavities. How did this happen to a sweet fourteen year old boy who only drank soda pop weekly, but brushed regularly?

It's often hard to choose a family dentist in the California area. What qualifications should you consider in a dentist? How do you know if a particular dentist is right for your family? There are some key indicators that can help you choose a family dentist.

Your dentist's commitment to dental education is important. Is the dentist a member of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) or the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD)? If so, what membership level has your dentist achieved? Membership in certifying organizations like the AGD and the AACD require their members to attend a predetermined number of continuing education hours. Dentists learn about best practices and developments in their fields through this process. A fellowship or mastership membership level indicates the dentist has completed rigorous additional educational hours.

An Oral and maxillofacial surgeon performs surgery on the mouth, jaw and face. Common surgeries are dental implants, correcting cleft palates and repairing facial injuries such as fractured jaws. Periodontists specialize in diseases of the gums and other tissues that support your teeth. If you have issues that require an oral surgeon or periodontist your dentist can refer one to you.

Extreme dental care can be handled well by a professional dentist with gentle hands. The great Carlsbad dentist in helped us enormously. My son has a permanent injury to the small piece of skin that attaches to the upper lip. It's mangled and gone now, but in its place is a lesson in care. No need for extreme care, take good care of your teeth and they will last a lifetime!
