A Glimpse At Pepper Spray

By William Ward

There are a few ways that people can take care of themselves if attacked, whether by another human or an animal. One of the most safe and effective ways is by using pepper spray on the assailant. It is an inexpensive and easy weapon to find and purchase. It comes in many different containers, including one small enough to fit on a keychain.

The main ingredient in the solution used for pepper spray is called Oleoresin Capsicum. This chemical is a natural derivative from peppers such as cayenne and chili. It acts as an inflammatory, almost instantly causing the eyes to swell shut. It causes temporary blindness and in very few cases, has been blamed for death.

Pepper spray is readily available to most citizens but is very popular in law enforcement. Police officers and prison wardens often use pepper spray to gain control over riots and unruly crowds. It is also been known to be used by hunters as extra protection from wild dogs and bears.

Although it is believed to be relatively harmless on most people, studies have shown that it can affect those with underlying health conditions in severe ways. For example, those with asthma have a greater risk of death if sprayed with the solution. Pepper spray often hinders breathing, therefore causing the target to have an asthma attack. The effects of the solution can last from 20 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the strength.

Because pepper spray is considered a weapon, there are laws that regulate the owning and selling of the product. In most states, it is illegal to sell the product to either minors or convicted felons. Some states have even stricter laws such as having to register the spray with the local police department.

In order for the owner of defense spray to safely and effectively use the weapon, training should be recommended. Different solutions and canisters can have different effects, therefore it is suggested that you educate yourself in not only the laws of your state, but also the use of your spray.

There are few choices for consumers when it comes to self defense. Some are easy and effective against a forceful assailant, whether it's human or animal. Pepper spray is commonly used by the average citizen but there are restrictions. Educate yourself in the law and ways to use the spray and you will feel safer when carrying any type of weapon.
