How to Use Pepper Spray

By Jim Wilkinson

Personal safety is a top priority and pepper spray can help. As a personal protection product, pepper spray is used to deter a physical attacker. Knowing how to properly use it will aide in your self defense should the need arise. Protect yourself by learning how to use pepper spray with the simple steps below.

You know that if you are being attacked it is going to be difficult to remain as calm as possible. Heck, your heart rate will jump and the adrenalin will flow. That is just natural. That is why it is so, so important to always have your pepper spray at the ready. You can even get a canister of it that has a keychain so that you always have it in your hand. Really make an effort to get into the habit of taking your pepper spray out as you are walking to your car at night or any other potentially vulnerable situation.

Your canister of pepper spray should always be used when it is being held in an upright position. The way they are designed it is pretty easy to avoid turning it upside down or sideways. One of the things to put some time into practicing is the release of the safety switch or also known as the actuator. Holding the canister upright you simply slide the switch over with your thumb. Easy to do and will come naturally if you have practiced doing it.

Now, point the canister towards the attackers face and press the release button to spray him. It does not happen often but you should be aware that if there is a strong wind the pepper spray could blow back into your face. Not good. When you spray with your right hand bring your left hand up to protect your face. This will help you to avoid getting hit with the spray.

Always aim directly for an attacker's face. Always. When you press the button down to shoot the spray, keep it pressed down and really soak his face. Don't be concerned about blinding him. The effects will wear off after about thirty minutes.

Sometimes you might not be able to shoot the pepper spray directly at an attackers face. Maybe their hand is up or they have a mask on. If that is the case still try to aim for as close to the face as possible. He will inhale the spray and that alone can put him down for awhile as he coughs and chokes. Remember, it is even more effective if you are able to have the spray contact his bare skin. Spray and run to safety.

It is okay to practice using pepper spray. You should practice quickly pulling it out and aiming it so that the next time that you are in dangerous situation you will be quick at the draw. Pepper spray could save your life when an attacker who is intent on causing you harm approaches you. It will give you up to 30 minutes to run from the location.

Just because you bought pepper spray does not make you safer unless you know the best way to use it. Your chances of escaping an attack will increase if you can use it correctly.
