Tips To Hon Your Talent In Music Writing

By Ray B. Mcroberts

Do you have music in your heart but a voice only a mother could love? If so, there still opportunities in the music world for you. Why not give songwriting a try? Lots of singers rely on the talents of songwriters to create hits for them.

If you think you have what it takes to be a songwriter, here are a few tips to get you started.

Of course you should know how to read and write music. This is basic. You could be the most talented person in the world, but if you can't read or write music you can share your gifts and make a living.

You can learn to read and write music many ways. Try taking lessons or buy a video or book. Many people do learn to read and write music as child, but you can still learn as an adult. Don't think it's too late to try.

After you've gotten those skills squared away you need to focus on a music style. I'm talking about country, music, rock, opera or whatever type of music that makes your heart sing. Then go ahead and start writing music and lyrics for the industry.

Now that you have narrowed down your interest and begun writing songs. You should cut a demo tape. This is a sample version of the song that you can play for producers and singers to see if they will want to buy it.

Don't be surprised if it takes some time before your songs take off. Most songwriters spend years perfecting their skills before selling their songs and becoming a success. Expect to hear criticism and use it better yourself. Think of setbacks as opportunities to improve.

It's important to market yourself and your work aggressive. Network when you can and look to the internet, direct mail and phone as other means of promoting your songs.
