Procrastination - The Avoiding Habit That Causes More Stress

Procrastination can easily become a habit as it creeps in. It can erode your capacity to function effectively once it does. But this habit can be hard to break. However, with some honest self-assessment and an organized and attainable plan of attack, it can be overcome successfully.

If you decide to try to kick the procrastination habit, be gentle with yourself. Because it may be so ingrained, you may not recognize all the ways you procrastinate. What you can do is take a large or complicated task and break it down into smaller parts that you can easily accomplish. It's important to bear in mind that the most difficult or complex tasks are simply just a series of smaller jobs.

Making a verbal commitment to someone else would help you in improving your time management skills and avoid procrastination. Allow others to become involved in your efforts by reviewing your progress, helping you set deadlines or evaluating your results can be very helpful. To fulfill the expectations they're set for you, this will most likely create a commitment on your part. What you can do is sit down and map out a plan so that your time can be managed more effectively.

When you allot time each day to work on a project that has a deadline, then it won't sneak up on you in the final hours or days. Learn to ask for help when you're feeling overwhelmed or overworked. Reward yourself for good behavior and accomplished goals. You shouldn't wait until you've accomplished the ultimate goal but rather give yourself a reward for successes along the way. Make sure the reward is something you like to do. How about treating yourself to the newest book by your favorite author and take time to read it? Indulge in bubble baths or relaxing music.

If you've gotten into the habit of working late, make sure you develop a new habit of going home on time each night. You'll find more time for yourself and have less stress if you make a commitment to avoid procrastination.
